There's something special about glass. We would know since we were some of the first folks to make sensory-focused coffee glasses. But before making those, we loved to use wine glasses and we often return due to their versatility and beauty. We are lovers of natural wines and the inherent acidity and fresh aromatics that come with them - reminding us a lot of some of the best modern processed coffees. Wine and coffee processing have more and more in common as time passes and we wanted to create a special glass to celebrate both. What started as a project to make the perfect glass for natural orange wines became our favourite glass for wines and coffees.
THE SHAPE
We obsessed over finding the perfect shape. Most wine glasses have a very low-to-the-ground bottom, which creates a heaviness and makes it awkward to hold. The designers do this in order to create a shallow thin layer of wine, at a detriment to usability. The glass then feels like it always wants to fall out of your hand and it's not enjoyable to hold or swirl. We designed for comfort with a higher curve and a much more balanced feel in the hand. A true delight!
THE FOCUS
We love the external shape of red wine glasses because they are spacious and more comfortable in the hand compared to narrow glasses made for fruitier lighter wines. But the narrower glasses make exciting wines (or coffees) shine more by directing the aromas more directly to the nose. They also lower the amount of oxygen in the glass to prevent a loss of vibrancy too quickly. We wanted to have the best of both worlds and designed a glass that does both - spacious in the hand, but narrow in the glass.
The PUNT
Our wine glass features a massive dimple (punt) in the middle, creating a huge negative space to help us achieve a narrow and shallow interior but maintain a wide and comfortable exterior. The punt also serves as a visual queue of where you should fill your glass to, keeping the right volume in the glass for the perfect sensory experience. The punt also acts as an aerator, as we decant, with force, directly onto it. This will further oxygenate the beverage to make it more vibrant.
THE SCIENCE
Using this shape we create a perfect environment for the ultimate sensory experience, as when you drink, the punt will force all aroma to completely surround the nose, pushing and narrowing the space in the glass. The wide shape is an illusion for what is in fact a much narrower glass - highlighting delicate aromatics in natural wines and in special coffees. Furthermore, the increased surface area of the bottom will keep cool drinks cooler for longer and will help cool down coffees quicker, bringing them to the perfect drinking temperature quickly for the perfect sip.
THE QUALITY
Our glassware is hand-blown by skilled craftspeople in the same factory that we have been making glassware for about four years now, in Indonesia. We use lab-grade borosilicate glass that is heat resistant and more durable than standard lime glass. Each glass undergoes over 10 steps of processing, care, and QC until it reaches its sturdy box and prepares its journey to a new home. Our prices are set to pay a fair price for these beautiful pieces that are individually crafted by a human being at a capacity of around 20 pieces per worker per day.
THE HARMONY
How do you create the perfect symphony in the palm of your hand? The comfort of the exterior shape, the perfectly balanced weight, the extreme lightness of the borosilicate glass body, the lowering of the volume and narowness inside the glass due to the punt, and the visual joy that is created when you hold, swirl, and look at this glass - this is true harmony. A feeling of joy, a feeling of calm - this is the glass you will want to use for everything, every time.
EARLY ACCESS
We have a total of just 250 of these beautiful glasses for the first release, split across our 3 shops. A second batch will come in around late July, if you miss out on the first release!
HANDMADE
These glasses are lovingly handmade from lab-grade borosilicate glass in our long-term partner factory in Indonesia. As they are hand-formed (not moulded), you can expect some marks and lines from the process. Each glass will have a tiny bit of variation, but we really love that about them.
