Though the price may seem steep - each set comes with 3 bottles, each containing 100g pre-mixed solution (TONIK, JAMM, and LYLAC). As per the guidance you get from APAX in the box, you only use 3-4 grams of liquid per litre of water. One set could make about 75-100 litres or 300-400 brews, lasting an average coffee drinker a whole year. Each box contains guides and useful recipes.
Compared to other solutions we have tried, APAX water mixes have proven to be longer-lasting and consistent through the whole bottle. This is important, as the mineral concentration won't dramatically change over time, giving you a better experience. We won't pretend that we understand the particular details as to why this is, but we can vouch for the attention to detail, quality of ingredients, and their performance over time as we have used these since Simon's very first available test batch a year ago.
APAX minerals come in three "profiles", rather than just as simple mineral ingredients. This means that each bottle is a pre-mix of things like magnesium, potassium, sodium, calcium (in some cases chrolides, in other case bicarbonates). This solution is a lot more morning-friendly, which we appreciate a lot. More importantly - each profile is great as-is, so you don't have to perform a mixology masterclass every morning if you don't want to. TONIK brings our a vibrant, bright, juicy profile. LYLAC brings an elegant, floral, and silky profile. JAMM brings a rich, sweet and creamy profile.
If you are feeling awake or are one of those lucky few that batch-prepare their brewing water, we have a great all-around recipe for you. Grab 1 litre of distilled/demineralised water and mix in 2g TONIK, 1g JAMM, and 1g LYLAC. Stir it well, heat it up and brew. That's it. No need to count drops at 7AM - just nice, quick, easy numbers on a scale. As you can rely on weight for accurately measuring the different recipes, it's much quicker and easier to prepare in bigger batches of 5-10L or as a daily ritual.
Rather than brewing with mineralised water, you can also use APAX post-brew if you brew with just distilled/demineralised water. You'll find guidance on how to do this in the box.
One of the most cost-effective ways to improve your brews dramatically is to improve the water. As water is the biggest ingredient in a cup of coffee, it's very important to use water of high quality with an appropriate mineral content. Tap water (depending where you live) is a common enemy to a good cup of coffee. Just using a "normal" water filter is usually better than using tap water, but won't may not have the right mineral balance for the clear, sweet, juicy, tasty cups you want to brew.
You don't need much! We highly recommend the Zero Water filter to bring your water to 0ppm as a cost-effective way to have a good starting point. You can also buy demineralised/deionised/distilled water - but be mindful of the waste this can create. Your city may have refilling stations for demineralised water, so we recommend checking that out or using a Zero Water jug if not. All of these solutions (though different) will give you a starting point with water at 0ppm and could provide a good basis for mineralising your own coffee brewing water without breaking the bank.
